When the Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon, they wore space suits that covered their entire bodies-they could not walk on the lunar surface without their boots or handle Moon rocks without their pressurized gloves. Robots, however, are not subject to these constraints. Mankind's helpmates in space Robots will beat men to Mars, paving the way for manned missions, and will later be indispensable helpers to space colonists. A robot is a machine that can automatically perform complicated tasks or that can be guided by automatic controls. Robots can position themselves in their environment, receive and process orders, make pre- programmed decisions or intelligently adapt to a given situation, repair themselves, and communicate with human beings. The Viking space probes launched in 1975, were robots, just like the Soviet lunar vehicle Lunokhod- but all were very primitive, to say the least! MARS BETAT
